Reflecting on what I have learned from reading the diversity case studies, and what I have experienced in the classroom, it is extremely important to consider all students (regardless of socioeconomic status) when deciding on school activities, fundraisers, and even assignments. Both case studies show us how fundraisers and classroom activities can inadvertently have negative effects on lower-income students if it causes them to feel inferior or left out. In the classroom, I’ve seen my collaborating teacher deliberately modify common practices of many teachers, to meet the needs of low-income students and families. For instance, she does not assign written homework to her kindergarten class . She understands that many parents work and do not have the time to work with their children. Mrs. Cecco does not think it is fair to penalize her students because their parents do not/cannot assist them with their homework. I have learned this semester to be more sensitive to the demographics of my students, as they might provide me with insight to the individual student’s background. Furthermore, showing interest and consideration for their cultural backgrounds will strengthen my relationship with my students.
