On February 25th, 2015, I was observed by my classmate Rachel. I was teaching a lesson on identifying the theme of a passage or story. She came in at the tail end of a game we were playing and immediately after, the student applied what they learned on a worksheet. The students had 4 passages, and they had to distinguish between the main idea and theme. At that time, I asked Ashley, my focus student, to sit with me one-on-one to clear up any misconceptions she had. Earlier in the lesson, Ashley answered a question incorrectly, and it was clear she had confused theme with main idea.

In Rachel’s feedback, she stated she liked the passage choice. She also like that I asked Andrea to summarize the passage in just one or two sentences (main idea). I also pointed out one specific event and used it as an example of how students my see that major event and think that is the main idea. I then when on to ask Ashley what lesson she learned from the passage, and advised her that was the theme. Rachel stated I used “very explicit clarification.”
